German cuisine has evolved as a national cuisine through centuries of social and political change with variations from region to region. The southern regions of Germany, including Bavaria and neighbouring Swabia, share many dishes. Furthermore, across the border in Austria one will find many similar dishes. However, ingredients and dishes vary by state. There are many significant regional dishes that have become both national and regional. Many dishes that were once regional, however, have proliferated in different variations across the country into the present day.

It was out one year anniversary dinner. The company was great. The service sucked. Here’s how it broke down.
We had to go to the counter in order to ask for a table.
Water came right away… It was downhill from there.
No service at all. I had to flag down a girl.
After a good while the waitress came over and told me they were out of meat. And this being when they had a special on steaks. The deal was Steak and wine for $25.
Later they brought out the wrong food. Mine was right by my lady friends was wrong.
Her chicken lacked much of the cheese it should have come with and was bland overall.
When I went to pay what was supposed to be my $53 meal turned into $76. Why… They had brought out Sourcrout that I did not ask for but I thought it was part of the meal and tried to charge me for it.
They charged me for a Coke we did not order
They charged me for wine that should have been part of my steak (ir lamb) dinner
So overall…. Food very average, kinda like you might have cooked it yourself at home.
Service not good at all… The girl at the counter blamed it on a “New Girl”….
Nothing else to say. I won’t be going there again.

Elkes restaurant is indeed five star. Myself and a group of friends go there for lunch every 7 weeks. As yet we have never had anything bad to say about the food or the service. Elkes is closed at lunch times but because my friends and I go what you would call regularly she opens up at lunch time just for us. What other restaurant would do this. My husband and I eat there often and in all the time it has been open we have never had a “bad” meal. Friends of mine come from Wellington and Lower Hutt to eat at Elkes and I am sure they wouldn’t if the food wasn’t good.

Went there for the first time in March. Would describe our experience as average. Took ages for our main, then dessert came out same time as they took our main plates away, no time in between.
You do get huge portions so can’t complain there. Just thought the food was bland, didn’t like the doughy egg noodles and overall found the food stodgy.
We won’t be back.

As a spur of the moment decision we decided to go out for a meal and felt like something a little different. I had heard about Elke’s Restaurant and having sampled the real thing in Germany thought we would go. We had no booking just walked in off the street and the minute we stepped in we felt we had made the right decision. I can honestly say we had the most amazing meal, the service was great, we felt very welcome and it was like we were back in time sitting in our most fav place in the world. There was nothing we could fault with Elke’s it was a genuine restaurant through and through, we will for sure be returning.

We love Elek’s so much we took the plunge tonight and took the in laws who love an amazing dining experience and they loved it. Mum in law had the chicken Snitzel, and adored it. Dad in law had Pork – both loved their meals and even shared a strudel for dessert. We, as usual loved the service, the food and the atmosphere – we will be going back again soon.
